Things You Need to Know...

Executive Order 20-96

Governor Tim Walz issued Executive Order 20-96, which will bring the following changes into effect starting this Friday, November 13:

BARS AND RESTAURANTS

  • Must close to all but carry-out from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
  • Bar counter area completely closed; no standing or seating.
  • All patrons must be seated. No games that require standing.
  • Both indoor and outdoor capacity: 50 percent, but not more than 150 people total.

SOCIAL GATHERINGS

  • 10-person limit for both indoor and outdoor gatherings.
  • Three households or fewer, including host.
  • Yes, this affects Thanksgiving dinner.

WEDDING RECEPTIONS, ETC.

  • Remain at 50 percent capacity or 250 people max until:
  • Nov. 27: 50-person limit.
  • Dec. 11: 25-person limit.
  • No changes to houses of worship, which remain at 50 percent capacity or 250 people max.

WHAT’S NOT CHANGING

No other current COVID-19 restrictions will be changed.

Nothing changes with actual wedding ceremonies and funeral services. Health officials said those events aren’t as big a source of transmission as the social gatherings afterward, be they formal receptions or casual huddles at someone’s house. In these events, people, surrounded by loved ones in an unstructured environment, often let down their guard. Masks come off, people get closer or embrace, time goes by, and the virus spreads, often from someone who didn’t know they were infected.

Youth sports practices and games, for example, can still go on — but gatherings afterward must follow the new, tighter restrictions.
